Ravi has lived with a severe, life-threatening dairy allergy since infancy. For most of his childhood, everyday moments that other kids take for granted, a slice of pizza at a birthday party, cake with classmates, ice cream on a family outing, carried real risk of anaphylaxis.
His mother, Autumn, planned around the danger constantly. She packed his food for visits to family and friends. She sent him to school parties with his own safe treats so he wouldn't feel left out. Family vacations meant bringing weeks' worth of meals from home, because restaurants couldn't be trusted, even dairy-free orders had triggered reactions through cross-contamination.
“Every outing required constant vigilance and planning, creating much anxiety for me and undue stress on our family.”
When Ravi was six, his family started oral immunotherapy (OIT) with Dr. Nicole Akar-Ghibril, director of the Oral Immunotherapy Program at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. OIT works by starting with a tiny amount of the food a patient is allergic to and gradually increasing the dose over time, retraining the immune system to tolerate it. Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital was the first hospital in South Florida to offer the treatment for food allergies.
For the next several years, the family kept a steady rhythm of monthly appointments, each one a small step forward. Over that time, Dr. Akar-Ghibril and her care team paired expert, hands-on care with patience and encouragement, helping Ravi build the trust and confidence it took to keep showing up, visit after visit, year after year.
“Ravi's journey is a wonderful example of why we do what we do. Oral immunotherapy can be a challenging process, but it can also open the door to experiences that families once thought might not be possible. It is a privilege to walk alongside our patients and their families through that journey, to support them, celebrate their progress, and help them feel more confident in navigating life with a food allergy. We feel truly blessed to be able to offer this program.”
“To most families, a child eating pizza may seem ordinary. To us, it represented years of hope, determination, and freedom.”
The change showed up fast. Ravi finished his last year of elementary school eating freely at classroom parties, his fifth-grade dance, and end-of-year celebrations, the same pizza and treats as his classmates, no separate food required. This summer, the family traveled without packing weeks of meals from home for the first time. They ate at restaurants together. Ravi had ice cream with the rest of his family, something Autumn once doubted she'd ever see.
Now, as Ravi heads into middle school, he's asking if he can buy lunch in the cafeteria like everyone else.
Just hearing him ask that question fills my heart with gratitude, because for the first time in his life, the answer is yes.
Autumn also credits nurse Kathleen and nurse practitioner Ivy Fernandez Fulchan, who cared for Ravi at every visit, for making each appointment feel manageable for the whole family.
