Bastian’s New Beat: A Story of Strength, Hope & Heart

April 01, 2026

Born at Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace, Bastian was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at birth. At just two days old, he was placed on medication to stabilize his condition. Four years later, he underwent his first heart surgery. Despite early intervention, Bastian spent years battling fatigue; unable to run, play, or enjoy life the way every child should.

He struggled with basic activities, like walking to the grocery store, and couldn’t run or play with other children. My baby was slowly fading away.

In May 2024, Bastian faced what could have potentially been his worst fate. While at school, he suddenly fainted and had no pulse. Teachers described his face as “turning blue” and immediately sprang into action, performing CPR and using an AED to restart his heart, which saved his life.

Bastian was rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where he underwent emergency heart surgery. A few weeks later, he received the heart transplant for which he had been waiting six months.

I now have my new heart, and my heart doesn’t get tired anymore!

From struggling to walk to now exploding with energy, Bastian’s journey is a testament to the power of organ donors, CPR, and unwavering hope.

His family is forever grateful to the donor who saved his life, to the heroic school staff who revived him, and the dedicated medical team at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital who helped bring Bastian back to life with a new and healthy heart.
