Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital provides students affiliated and not affiliated (independent) with a college/university two opportunities to observe and train with Child Life Specialists and engage patients with various diagnoses and conditions in a hospital setting.

Internship

The Child Life Internship offers students an opportunity to get hands-on training over 13-weeks. The internship is a 520-hour (or 40 hours per week) commitment and includes weekends and community events. Internships are currently only being offered during the fall and spring.

Prerequisites for Internship Applicants

Affiliated with a College/University

Applicants who wish to participate as part of a college/university curriculum:

  • Signed contract of agreement for internship participation with your college/university.
  • Completed on-boarding through Complio which includes background check, fingerprints, liability insurance coverage, etc. Access to Complio provided upon offer/acceptance of the internship.
  • Completion of a Practicum is required.
  • To be eligible you will need to be in the process of obtaining or already have obtained a Child Life related college degree.

Not Affiliated with a College/University

Independent applicants who are not affiliated with a college or university:

  • Complete form provided by our Volunteer Services Department, which is sent to interns upon acceptance of the internship. This volunteer form includes signed consent for fingerprints and background check to be completed.
  • Completion of a Practicum is required.
  • To be eligible you will need to be in the process of obtaining, or already have obtained, a Child Life related college degree.

In addition to the Common Child Life Internship Application, please include a 1-2 page written statement of the applicants personal philosophy of Child Life.

Practicum

The Child Life Practicum experience is a unique opportunity offered in the summer and fall to students. Our practicum is a 180-hour program that allows students to invest their time in a unit to help build rapport with staff, student confidence, and facilitate relationships with patients and their families.

Your experience will include, but is not limited to:

  • Shadowing child life specialist on the unit
  • Spending one-on-one time with patients
  • Observing procedural support/preparation completed by the child life specialist
  • Planning and implementing therapeutic play activities
  • Observing and participating in play
    • Medical play
    • Developmental play
    • Bedside play for normalization of hospital environment
  • Facilitating activities (group and/or individual)
  • Rounding on patients and families to assess their needs
  • Help with utilization of departmental resources

Prerequisites for Practicum Applicants

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA both cumulative and in major
  • Coursework in related field of (a minimum of 5 completed courses)
  • 50 hours volunteering in a Children’s Hospital
  • Experience with well children
  • Current enrollment in or completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in related field of study

Application Requirement

  • An unofficial transcript from each university you have attended
  • Two letters of recommendation (advisor, supervisor, child life specialist, etc.)
  • Current resume
  • List of 3 goals and objectives you wish to accomplish
  • 1-2 page written statement explaining why you are exploring a practicum at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital

Affiliated with a College/University
