After years of construction, this was the moment Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s team and families have been waiting for — move-in day! On November 8, 2022, more than 55 children and their families were transferred through the skywalk to three separate floors of the newly expanded pediatric hospital.

“This herculean effort included more than 600 hours of planning and eight hours to execute a safe and efficient transfer of our patients and families,” said Caitlin Stella, CEO, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “Our team built a robust command center to ensure every single detail was seamlessly managed, as more than 50 healthcare team members worked together to transfer our most precious asset - our patients.”

The $166 million investment and expansion of the hospital has always focused on delivering the highly specialized care and developing new programs and services to benefit our community’s children and families. The hospital’s growth allows Memorial Healthcare System to meet the continuous demand for specialized services with new surgical capabilities, treatments and patient/family programs added to its mix of already established offerings.

The hospital and its leadership are grateful for every person, organization and company who assisted in this process and are forever thankful to those who have supported these efforts through the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation.

In true Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital fashion, this was a serious move that also incorporated delightful fun, because the team believes in the philosophy of healing through the power of play. Patients were serenaded and celebrated by Lotsy Dotsy and members of the Child Life team, received special visits by princesses and much more.
