At the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Memorial Hospital Miramar, even the smallest patients were full of holiday cheer.

Dressed in their Easter best, these egg-stra special babies brought smiles to their families and care teams, reminding everyone that joy, hope, and renewal can blossom even in the most delicate of circumstances. For parents of premature newborns who aren’t yet able to go home, celebrations like these provide comfort, connection, and a sense of normalcy during a challenging time.

“Because moms are away from their babies—even for a short period of time—we try to bring a sense of comfort,” said Jami Perez, PCA at Memorial Hospital Miramar. “Holidays are a fun time and dressing up their babies can help get parents into a positive place emotionally. It’s a chance to have a little fun, even if their baby is in the NICU. The parents really seem to enjoy it.”

The Wasie NICU at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital provides Level IV neonatal intensive care—the highest level available—for complex conditions and extremely premature infants. This nationally recognized unit, together with its sister hospitals Memorial Hospital Miramar and Memorial Hospital West (both of which house Level III NICUs), offers a seamless system of advanced neonatal care.

Dedicated NICU transport services ensure that babies who need a higher level of care can be transferred swiftly and safely. Depending on their needs, some babies may spend only a few days in the NICU, while others may remain for several months.

These special Easter moments reflect the compassionate, family-centered care that defines the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital NICU system—making even the smallest celebrations feel monumental for the tiniest of patients.
