With much anticipation and excitement, leaders and program directors of the Memorial Graduate Medical Education (GME) program learned which medical residents from across the country and the world would be joining its inaugural class.

This was Memorial GME’s first Match Day with 31 residency spots filled within its accredited residency programs of pediatrics, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation and 2 additional spots in podiatry for a total of 33 residency spots.

“Memorial did amazingly well in this year’s National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) based on where we filled in our rank lists to our average incoming United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores and the overall number and quality of the applicants we received. All these components show that Memorial is a place where doctors want to train. We take the responsibility of training physicians seriously and are committed to doing what’s right for these young doctors.” said Saima Chaudhry, MD, Chief Academic Officer of Memorial Healthcare System.

All residency program collectively attracted 5,857 applicants. Less than 10% were granted an interview, resulting in Memorial’s GME program matching with 33  residents who are coming from medical schools as far as Australia and as close as Palm Beach County.

The journey to Match Day started in 2015, when Memorial Healthcare System received initial institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council forGraduate Medical Education (ACGME). Later, they received accreditation for three residency programs, and also integrated the existing Podiatry program. GME is currently pursuing accreditation for a neurology and a psychiatry residency program, among others.

“We are looking forward to meeting this group of accomplished professionals,” Dr. Chaudhry said. “We are excited for what lies ahead for this inaugural class and for the future growth of Memorial’s GME program.”
