Heather Trusts Lily to Our NICU in the Moments that Count

Lily, NICU Patient

When Lily arrived early via C-section, her mother Heather, who had a high-risk pregnancy due to adult congenital heart disease, placed her trust in our Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experts at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

“Lily needed extensive resuscitation at the time of birth. We needed to put in a breathing tube to help her breathe,” said Yasser Al-Jebawi, MD, Neonatal Perinatal Medicine. “She responded very well, and we transferred her to the NICU.”

“Even though I was still in the [Memorial Regional] hospital hooked up to IVs and stuff, the nurses would pack everything up and take me down to the NICU to see Lily,” Heather said. “I was able to start bonding with her.”

This wasn’t her first Wasie NICU experience, Heather explained. “We knew that the neonatal unit here was going to take such good care of her because they had taken such great care of our son,” she said. “He was here for 2 months.”
