The National Hockey League has announced the 32 team nominees for the 2022-23 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is presented ‘to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.’ Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, a Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation ambassador, has been selected as the club's 2022-23 nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The winner will be chosen by a committee of senior NHL executives led by Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. The selection committee will apply the following criteria in determining the finalists and winner:

  • Clear and measurable positive impact on the community
  • Investment of time and resources
  • Commitment to a particular cause or community
  • Commitment to the League’s community initiatives
  • Creativity of programming
  • Use of influence; engagement of others

The first-place finisher will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice. The two runners-up each will receive a $5,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of their choice.

Barkov, 27, created a partnership of his own (#BarkovScores4JoeD) with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. With every goal that he scores, Barkov promises to donate $1,600 in honor of his #16 and $800 for every assist. With nearly four seasons of the partnership competed, Barkov has committed more than $300,000 to the children’s hospital. Additionally, each regular season, Barkov buys and donates a suite at FLA Live Arena for each Panthers home game to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital so children, families, doctors, nurses, and caretakers can enjoy Panthers hockey.

“Sasha has been a great ambassador for us and a credit to athletes everywhere, selflessly sharing of himself and bringing joy to those impacted by illness,” said Kevin Janser, president of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation. “We’re proud to have him on our team and wish the Panthers the best of luck in their quest for the Stanley Cup.”

The King Clancy Memorial Trophy was presented in 1988 by the NHL’s Board of Governors in honor of Frank “King” Clancy, a beloved figure in the League for decades as a player, referee, coach, manager and goodwill ambassador. A three-time Stanley Cup champion and 1958 inductee to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Clancy was voted as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players during the League’s Centennial Celebration in 2017.

Barkov has previously won the NHL’s Frank J. Selke trophy, signifying the game’s best defensive forward, and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the NHL player that combines sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct, and a high standard of playing ability. A Boca Raton resident, Barkov was the second overall pick in the 2013 draft and has played his entire NHL career for the Panthers.
