Did you know, each year in the United States thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly during the first year of life?

Unfortunately, some of these deaths are from unknown causes, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), while others are from known causes that may be related to how and where the baby was sleeping.

ABCs of Safe Sleep

An important time to remind families that safe sleep for infants is as easy as A, B, C: Alone, on their Back and in a Crib.

Alone: Do not put soft objects, toys, crib bumpers or loose bedding under baby, over baby, or anywhere in baby’s sleep area.

  • Alone also means that baby should be in his or her own sleep area.
  • We recommend sleeping in the same room as the baby, but not in the same bed.

Back: Always place your baby on their back to sleep during naps and at night to reduce the risk of SIDS.

  • The back-sleep position is recommended for all babies until they turn one.
  • Don’t fret if your baby rolls onto their stomach.

It's most important for them to start sleeping on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS, however, there's no need to reposition them if they flip over.

Crib: Babies should always sleep in a crib, bassinet or pack-n-play.

  • Never allow your baby to sleep in an adult bed, on a couch or a chair.
  • Use a firm and flat sleep surface, such as a mattress, covered by a fitted sheet.
  • Do not use a car seat, stroller, swing, infant carrier or infant sling as your baby’s regular sleep area.

Here are some additional important tips to make sure your baby is sleeping safely:

  • Do not smoke during pregnancy, and do not smoke or allow smoking around your baby or in their environment.
  • Consider giving your baby a pacifier for naps and nighttime to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Do not let your baby get too hot during sleep. We live in South Florida, so it’s important to dress for the environment.
  • Do not over bundle. Dress the baby in sleep clothing such as a wearable blanket.
  • Make sure your baby has plenty of tummy time when he or she is awake, and someone is watching.
  • Follow guidance from your healthcare provider and keep up with regular health checkups.
