The Joe DiMaggio Children's Health Outpatient Surgery Center at Wellington offers same-day, pediatric outpatient surgery in a patient- and family-centered environment to parents living in Palm Beach county. Led by our medical director, Samuel Ostrower, MD, our experienced team of pediatric surgeons operates out of a brand new, 7,800 sq. ft. facility and will offer the following surgical services:

Preparation for Surgery
How do I schedule my child's surgery?
Your child's physician will discuss their surgery with you during the office visit, and their surgical appointment will be scheduled at that time. Be sure to tell your child's doctor about any existing medical conditions and any medication they are currently taking.
Will I be contacted prior to my child's appointment?
Yes, after your child's surgery is scheduled, you will receive a phone call from a member of our nursing staff to obtain their basic health history and review their pre-operative instructions. Our staff member will inform you of the time your child should arrive at the Center the day of surgery, or you may call us at 561-341-7100 to receive your instructions. It is very important that you speak with someone from the Center prior to the date of your child's surgery.
You will be also contacted by a member of our business office staff regarding your child's insurance coverage and your portion of the bill. They will discuss the fee for your child's surgery, as well as the co-payment, co-insurance, or deductible.
Should my child's doctor submit anything to the Center?
If your child has had any pre-operative tests, or a history and physical performed within 30 days prior to surgery, please ask their physician to fax or send the reports to us prior to your arrival at 561-784-7102.
What preparations should I make the day before my child's surgery?
Please follow these important safety rules the day before your child's surgery. If these guidelines are not followed, their operation may be delayed or cancelled.
- Make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive them home after surgery. Taxi transportation is allowed only for those patients accompanied by an adult escort.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to the surgery unless otherwise instructed by the doctor (i.e., food, liquid, candy, gum and breath mints).
- If applicable, do not smoke or use any tobacco products after midnight the night before the surgery.
- If applicable, do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before and after the surgery.
- If your child takes insulin or any other routine medication, your child's doctor or anesthesiologist will tell you how they should take their medication the day of the surgery.
- If your child takes a blood thinner (such as Coumadin, aspirin, etc.), please tell the surgeon.
- If your child takes normal heart, blood pressure, breathing, or seizer medication, they can take it the morning of surgery with a sip of water.
- Failure to follow these instructions can cause serious complications.

Can I bring my other children to the Center?
Children must not be left unattended in the reception area, and will not be permitted in restricted areas for their own safety and the safety of our patients. If you choose to bring your other children, please make certain that they have adequate supervision.
The Day of Surgery
What should I do if we're running late or can't make the appointment?
If your child is unable to keep the appointment or you are delayed, please contact the Center immediately at 561-341-7100.
How early should we arrive and where can I park?
Plan to arrive approximately one hour prior to your child's surgery. Free parking is available and transportation can be arranged if necessary.
How should I prepare my child the day of surgery (i.e., grooming, clothes, etc.)?
- Shower or bathe normally.
- Brush teeth or rinse mouth, provided nothing is swallowed.
- Leave all jewelry and other valuables at home as we cannot be responsible for their safe-keeping.
- Wear low-heeled shoes and loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to put on and take off. Avoid garments that pull over your head. Sleeves and legs should be loose enough to fit over bandages if necessary.
- Remove contact lenses, all makeup and nail polish.
What items should I bring with me?
If applicable, bring the following items for your child:
- Health insurance card and/or forms. You may also be asked to bring your child's co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible.
- If your child takes regular medications, please bring them so our anesthesiologists can see exactly what medications your child takes.
- Contact lenses or eyeglasses in a protective case
- Hearing aid
- Crutches or walker
What should I do when I arrive at the Center?
Please register at the front desk upon arrival. Your child will be escorted into the pre-operative area where their pulse, temperature, respiration, and blood pressure will be taken. Your child will be asked to change into a gown provided by the Center, and their clothes will be placed in a secured area until they are ready to be discharged. Your child's anesthesiologist and surgeon will visit with you both prior to surgery.
What happens during my child's surgery?
Depending on the type of surgical procedure and other factors, your child may walk into the operating room for their procedure, and anesthesia will be administered there. You won't be allowed to stay in the operating room during the surgery.
After your child's procedure is complete, they will be moved to a recovery area until they are ready to go home. At this time, you'll be escorted to the recovery room to be with your child as they awaken (only one visitor is allowed in the recovery room). Once awoke, they will be given something to eat and drink.
After You Leave the Center
What will happen after my child's surgery?
When your child's surgery is complete, they will be taken to the recovery room until they are able to sit up and dress. Once dressed, they will complete their recovery in our recovery lounge. The length of time your child needs to rest before leaving will depend on the nature of their surgery. We prefer to have a family member or friend join them in our post op area when possible. In order to prevent overcrowding, we must limit this to one person. Therefore we ask that you not bring children or others who cannot remain unattended in the reception area.
Are there special post-operation instructions to follow?
Upon discharge, you'll be given instructions for further care at home. You will be instructed by the nurses about medication, diet, and rest requirements for your child.
What should I do to help my child recover safely?
The day of surgery and perhaps at the time of discharge, they may feel sleepy, tired and dizzy. Our advice is to take them home to rest for the remainder of the day. Plan to have a responsible adult stay with your child the night after surgery. If they experience difficulties or complications once you return home, please contact your child's surgeon immediately.If they are of age, they should not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or make any important decisions for at least 24 hours after leaving our Center.
Will someone follow-up with me after my child's surgery?
A member of our facility will phone you to see how your child is doing or you may contact us during business hours at 561-341-7100.

Financial Information & Arrangements
As a service to our patients, prior to the day of the procedure, we will provide an estimate of the surgery center fees and patient responsibility (coinsurance, copayments, or deductible amounts) you will be required to pay prior to or on the day of your surgery. Failure to resolve payment issues before the date of surgery could possibly result in the postponement of your surgery. The surgery center’s fees are based on the procedure your physician scheduled.
As with any medical procedure, if unforeseen circumstances should arise during the procedure, it may be necessary for the physician to perform additional or different procedures and/or to use more/less expensive supplies or implants. The use of implants and/or the difference in procedures may cause the estimate to vary significantly. However, it is understood that final gross charges and patient responsibility will depend on actual services provided and may or may not exceed the original estimate.
In accordance with Florida Law, upon verbal or written request, Joe DiMaggio Children's Health Outpatient Surgery Center will provide the patient in writing or by electronic means a good faith estimate of the facility’s anticipated gross charges based on the patient’s procedure(s) as indicated by the physician to treat the patient’s condition within seven (7) business days of the request (if a patient is insured, the contracted insurance rates will supersede the gross charges estimate).
In addition to our facility fee, you may receive separate bills for the following services:
- Your physician or surgeon
- Laboratory tests, if they were required by your physician
- Pathology, if tissues or specimens were removed during surgery
- Durable medical equipment
Any questions regarding these services should be directed to these respective billing offices.
For your convenience, we accept Master Card, Visa, personal checks from a local bank with a picture ID, and cash. Please note there is a $25.00 fee for checks returned to the facility for insufficient funds.

Notice of Policy Regarding Advance Directives
This facility requires the following notice be signed by each patient (parent) prior to scheduled procedures in order to be in compliance with the law and rules regarding advance directives and to make you aware of your rights to make informed decisions regarding your care and the right to make Advance Directives. Advance Directives are statements that indicate the type of medical treatment wanted or not wanted in the event an individual is unable to make those determinations and who is authorized to make those decisions.
There are many types of advance directives, but the two most common are:
- Healthcare Surrogate (we can provide to you at your request)
This form allows the individual (18 and older) to designate a person of their choosing to make medical decisions if the individual is unable to make the decisions themselves.
- Living Wills (we can provide to you at your request)
These generally state the type of medical care an individual wants or does not want if he/she becomes unable to make his/her own decisions.
In the ambulatory care setting, if a patient should suffer a cardiac or respiratory arrest or other life-threatening situation, this signed form implies consent for resuscitation and transfer to a higher level of care. Therefore, in accordance with federal and state law, the facility is notifying you it will not honor a signed Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNRO), but will communicate all Advance Directives to the medical facility providing the higher level of care in the event of a needed transfer.
If you or your adult child previously completed an advance directive(s), please make this information known and bring the form(s) with you. These forms will be utilized to discuss care options and will be made part of your medical record. If you cannot locate the forms, the facility will have blank forms that you can sign upon arrival.
