How We Offer Care
Dialysis is a life-sustaining procedure that requires a team approach and the participation of both the medical team and the patient's family. At our pediatric-only dialysis center, patients are monitored for adequacy of treatments, nutrition, bone health, anemia and growth. Most importantly, they are referred for transplantation very early. We also provide the service of pediatric dialysis social workers and child life specialists who, in addition to helping the children integrate into school, are instrumental in the psychological well being of both patients and their families.
We also offer pediatric dialysis on-site as well as training for home dialysis, if needed. Here, we support a patient- and family-centered care philosophy and encourage information sharing and collaboration between families and staff.
Emotional Support and Child-friendly Environment
Living with kidney disease can be very challenging. Both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are time-consuming and bring change to activities, diet and other aspects of daily life.
In addition to medical services, the Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program provides essential emotional support. A child-friendly environment, including televisions, games and other activities, help keep young patients entertained during lengthy dialysis treatment. In addition, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital has an available Broward County Public Schools teacher to assist children who have had extended school absences.

The extraordinary physicians at the Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital have many years of experience diagnosing and treating pediatric kidney disorders including pediatric kidney diseases, hypertension, and metabolic bone disorders.
