Emergency Transportation Services

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital offers both air and ground transport for patients being transferred to our facility. Each member of our pediatric transport team is certified in pediatric advanced life support and advanced cardiac life support and is highly experienced in emergency pediatric care. The neonatal transport team is certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and Neonatal Transport. Whenever possible, a parent is invited to accompany the child during ground or air transport.

Ground Transport

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital has a dedicated ambulance for prompt ground transport of infants and children from local hospitals. The pediatric transport team includes a pediatric intensive care nurse, a pediatric respiratory therapist and a pediatric intensive care physician, if necessary. The neonatal transport team includes a neonatal intensive care nurse, a neonatal respiratory therapist and a neonatal nurse practitioner or neonatologist, if necessary. In addition, our transport team performs mobile extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) for patients, who may need to be transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital for highly specialized cardiopulmonary services. Our transport team provides high-quality medical care on the way to the hospital while staying in constant contact with hospital-based physicians to help facilitate seamless care upon arrival.

Air Transport

Air medical transport services, via a fully equipped Learjet, are also available for newborns or children requiring transport to or from hospitals outside the region, state or country. Ground and fixed-wing jet transport teams can perform mobile extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) for patients with critical heart or lung conditions. A helicopter ambulance provides transportation services for critically ill children from other Florida healthcare facilities to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Both ground and air ambulances have a dedicated staff of neonatal and pediatric intensive care nurses and respiratory therapists to manage the patient’s nursing and respiratory needs while in transport. Whenever possible, parents are encouraged to accompany the child on the flight.
