Medical Director, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute
I am currently the medical director of the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Healthcare System. I am also a pediatric and adult cardiac surgeon specializing in congenital heart surgery.
Throughout my career, I have held many leadership positions in the Florida medical community. Prior to joining Memorial, I served as chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and director of Pediatric Heart Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital; chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville; and chief of Cardiac Surgery at Veterans Administration Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Currently, I am honorary professor of surgery at the University of the West Indies and have had the honor of being included on the "America's Top Doctors" list several times.
In addition to my leadership and surgical responsibilities, I have also published and lectured throughout my career. I have held teaching appointments at Duke University, the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and University of Florida College of Medicine.
In the past I was also involved in clinical research. My research interests include, at that time, the use of vascular clip devices in congenital heart surgery, and the impact of profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest on regional cerebral temperature and protection.
I have been actively involved in the Jamaican Children's Heart Fund, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing Jamaican children with cardiac surgery and currently work with Chain of Hope, a London-based charity, to establish a sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery program in Jamaica.
