Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is a procedure in which flexible tubes are inserted
into the arteries or veins and advanced into or around the heart. Using catheters,
doctors can perform many kinds of diagnostic or therapeutic (also called
interventional) procedures without having to perform highly invasive surgery.
Sometimes, surgical and interventional procedures can be combined into a
hybrid procedure for maximum benefit. The Cardiac Center at Joe DiMaggio
Children's Hospital is the only children's
hospital in Broward and Palm Beach
Counties performing pediatric cardiac catheterization, and it is staffed
with an experienced pediatric interventional cardiologist and support personnel
who understand the anatomy of infant and pediatric hearts.
