Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Awarded Prestigious LEED® For New Construction “Gold” Certification
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(Hollywood, Fla.) — Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has been awarded LEED® for New Construction “Gold” certification, established by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED® is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Florida with LEED® for New Construction “Gold” certification.
“We are grateful and proud to have achieved LEED® for new construction “Gold” certification,” said Nina Beauchesne, administrator for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “This certification is a testament to our commitment to the community and the environment. We created and built a green hospital that incorporates smart designs that maximize our use of natural resources, but also offers functionality and convenience to the patients and families we serve.”
The hospital achieved LEED® for New Construction Gold certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as, incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, LEED® certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
From the early stages of conception to the development of design and operation of the new hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital officials had planned on developing a green building that would meet LEED® criteria. To this end, many groups were involved in the planning process, including: physician, staff and members of the Family Advisory Committee, composed of patients and families; Stanley Beaman & Sears, the architectural firm who designed the hospital; Saltz Michelson Architects, the LEED® accredited professional on the project, and ANF Group, Inc., the construction team. Members of the Family Advisory Committee visited other children’s hospitals across the country to bring back ideas and best practices in designs that could be incorporated as added features for patients and families staying at the hospital.
“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit further generations to come.”
LEED® for New Construction Gold certification of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:
- Access to public transportation
- Availability of bike racks and showers
- Employee shuttle service for parking
- Catches, stores and reuses rainwater
- Water efficient landscaping
- Use of building material with recycled content
- Use of local/regional construction material to reduce transportation issues
- Use of low VOC materials such as sealants, adhesives, paints, and carpets
