About Us
The Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program provides patient care to infants, children and adolescents with kidney disorders. Our team includes board-certified physicians, and nurses certified and experienced in pediatric dialysis. They work closely with other physicians to coordinate treatment plans and monitor all aspects of a child's health.
Dialysis Center
Dialysis is a life-sustaining procedure that requires a team approach and the participation of both the medical team and the patient's family. At our pediatric-only dialysis center, patients are monitored for adequacy of treatments, nutrition, bone health, anemia and growth. Most importantly, they are referred for transplantation very early. We also provide the service of pediatric dialysis social workers and child life specialists who, in addition to helping the children integrate into school, are instrumental in the psychological well being of both patients and their families.
Treating the Whole Child
Living with kidney disease can be very challenging. Both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are time-consuming, and bring change to activities, diet and other aspects of daily life.
In addition to medical services, the Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program provides essential emotional support. A child-friendly environment, including televisions, games and other activities, help keep young patients entertained during lengthy dialysis treatment. In addition, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital has an available Broward County Public Schools teacher to assist children who have had extended school absences.
