Bio
Dr. Birken is a fellowship-trained, board-certified surgeon and has been Surgeon-in-Chief at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital since 2004. After earning his bachelor's degree at Ohio University in Athens and his medical degree at Chicago Medical School, he went on to Ohio State University Hospitals where he completed a research fellowship in pediatric surgery and a surgical residency. He completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at Columbus Children's Hospital.
Dr. Birken has been affiliated with Memorial Healthcare System since 1986, and in 1992 became the first medical director and pediatric surgeon at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Through the years, his leadership roles have included a wide variety of administrative appointments within the hospital and Memorial Healthcare System, and with organizations in the community and throughout the state and country.
He is a member of many medical organizations, including the American Pediatric Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, and Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Birken has published numerous papers and given many presentations on topics related to pediatric surgery, including the treatment of trauma in pediatric patients.
An accomplished novelist, Dr. Birken is the author of several medical mysteries.
