Mallory
Pediatric Program
Today, 5-year-old Mallory sees the world in a whole new light — thanks to a surgical procedure she received at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.
Mallory was affected by a condition called strabismus, which only occurs in about 4 percent of children. It is a visual defect where the eyes are misaligned, typically resulting in reduced vision and lack of depth perception.
Mark Dorfman, MD, Chief of Pediatric Surgery and pediatric ophthalmologist at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, performed surgery to correct the misalignment. "Dr. Dorfman explained all the details about the procedure, so we were well prepared," says Mallory's mom.
With her vision corrected, Mallory can now set her sights on the things she loves most. She's a star student at Hollywood Hills Elementary and enjoys caring for her many household pets with her older sister, Madison.
The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye examination for children before 6 months and again at age 3.
