Safety Town
Safety Town at C.B. Smith Park, Tree Tops Park and T.Y. Park
Especially for Kindergartners and First-Graders
This early childhood education program is designed especially for kindergartners and first-graders with the goal of reducing accidental injuries and deaths. The child-size town features working traffic signals, street signs, crosswalks, miniature houses and small tricycles, along with a variety of interactive stations.
Police Station: A uniformed police officer teaches
kids the basics of “stranger danger” at this station.
They are given instruction about safety skills and
precautions to take when home alone.
Water Safety Station: Children receive instruction from certified lifeguards including,
“buddy swimming,” basic rescue techniques and safe behavior in and around the water.
Fire Safety Station: Children interact with a firefighter and learn the basics of fire safety,
including practicing “stop, drop and roll” and how to dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
Bike Safety Station: The basics of bike and car safety are taught at this station. Once the lesson
is complete, kids then “buckle-up” on tricycles and begin their ride through Safety Town. While riding,
they have an opportunity to stop at a miniature working traffic light, obey pint-sized traffic signs
and even stop for a real railroad crossing.
Parks and Recreation Station: Taught by a park naturalist, this station helps educate kids
about hiking and wilderness safety. Kids also learn about the importance of respecting animals, plants
and shrubs found in parks.
Safety Town is open by appointment during the week for public, private, charter schools and children’s groups. For more information or to schedule a free field trip, please call Memorial Healthcare System’s Community Relations Department at (954) 276-5991.
