Surgical Guidelines
At Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, we understand the emotions that can be involved when a child needs to have surgery. In order to better prepare you and your child for surgical procedure, please review the following guidelines.
Families who would like a closer look at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital prior to a procedure can schedule a Teddy Bear Tour of the facility by contacting the Child Life Program at (954) 987-2020, extension 4498.
Before the Surgery is Scheduled
- To provide quality patient care, pre-admission testing is required before surgery can be scheduled. A complete medical history, physical exams and blood tests allow the surgical team to focus on each patient's specific needs.
- On the weekday before the surgery, you will receive a call from the hospital. You will be given instructions that cover such things as whether your child can eat the night before the surgery, what time to arrive at the hospital and where to report.
- If you'll need a place to stay while your child is recovering from surgery, the Conine Clubhouse
can be your home away from home. Please call for room availability. There is no charge, but donations are accepted. Accommodations are based on
availibility.Learn more about the Conine Clubhouse, or call

The Day of Surgery
- Please arrive at the hospital at the instructed time. You will need to complete all forms before your child can be admitted and prepared for surgery.
- Your child will be prepared for anesthesia (or another form of sedation) and for the procedure. You may stay with your child until he or she goes into the operating room.
- Your surgeon will be available before and after the surgery to answer any questions you may have.
- After recovery, your child will be transferred back to a pediatric unit where you can be with him or her.
After Surgery
- We encourage your participation in your child's care. You may remain with your child or visit him or her as often as you are able.
- One parent is allowed to stay overnight with the child. A comfortable sleep chair is provided. Coffee, bagels and sandwiches are also available.
- You may bring personal items for your child such as pajamas, slippers, stuffed animals or toys. Some items, such as diapers and pajamas, may be supplied by Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital if needed.
