Pediatric Cancer Program
The Pediatric Cancer Program at
Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital is staffed
with board-certified pediatric hematologists and oncologists specially
trained and experienced in managing acute leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors,
soft tissue sarcoma and bone tumors, as well as non-cancerous hematology problems
such as sickle
cell disease, blood coagulation disorders, iron deficiency and anemia.
The program is a member of the Florida Pediatric Community Clinical Oncology Program and is affiliated with the Children's Oncology Program.
Skilled Pediatric Specialists
Children have medical needs best addressed by specialists trained in childhood
cancers and related blood disorders. Our pediatric specialists and certified
nurse practitioners are leading professionals in the areas of radiation oncology,
endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, radiology, neurology, neurosurgery
and psychiatry.
Skilled Support Staff
Social workers, child life specialists, dietitians, registered nurses, chemotherapy pharmacists, laboratory personnel and home health nurses help patients and families through every step of treatment — as well as Lotsy Dotsy, our humor therapist and resident clown.
Inpatient and Outpatient Care
The pediatric cancer team strives to provide a stress-free environment for treatment. In many cases, certified home health nurses can administer chemotherapy in the child's home. Treatment can also be given in cheerfully decorated suites, complete with entertainment centers. If hospitalization is necessary, the kid-friendly hospital staff is ready with comprehensive care and plenty of smiles.
Education and Support Programs
Child life specialists help young patients return to school, explaining cancer to teachers and other students. For the child who must stay at home, we can arrange for a licensed Broward County teacher to make sure that schoolwork isn't neglected. A variety of support groups are available for children with cancer, as well as their siblings and parents.
To help patients maintain a normal lifestyle, we encourage kids with cancer to participate in summer camp programs designed specifically for them. The Love Jen Fund, established in memory of one of our cancer patients, supports programs that help families cope.
The Conine Clubhouse is a free home away from home for families of hospitalized children. Since opening in 1977, the facility has provided services to thousands of families worldwide.
