Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
About the NICU
If your baby has been admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), it is because he or she requires more care then the Newborn Nursery can provide. The unit provides both Level II and Level III care for critically ill newborns. Intensive care services are carefully monitored 24 hours a day by neonatologists and specialty-trained nursing, respiratory and support staff. JDCH is one of only a few hospitals worldwide to offer Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), a life-saving procedure for infants with severe respiratory problems.
The NICU has one purpose and that is to take care of sick newborns. With the latest medical procedures and state-of-the-art technology, the NICU is equipped to handle most any emergency.
Babies may require care in the NICU for many reasons. Our NICU takes care of babies that are premature, experience complications at birth or have:
- Bowel obstructions
- Cardiac anomalies
- Congenital anomalies
- Hyaline membrane disease
- Hydrocephaly
- Infections
- Low blood sugars
- Meconium aspiration syndrome
- Necrotizing enterocolitis
- Neonatal sepsis
- Patent ductus arteriosus
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension
- Retinopathy of prematurity
- Tracheo-esophageal fistula
The NICU at Joe DiMaggioChildren's Hospital is a Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center (RPICC). We are one of only eleven RPICCs in the state of Florida. As a Transport Center, our NICU also offers a dedicated transport team that is available at all times.
The NICU at Joe DiMaggioChildren's Hospital has affiliations with many other area hospitals which refer patients to Joe DiMaggioChildren's Hospital who need medical and/or surgical treatments not provided by their own facility. Once the infant is medically stable, the infant will be returned to the originating facility by the Joe DiMaggioChildren's Hospital NICU transport team.
Joe DiMaggioChildren's Hospital has The Conine Clubhouse, a special place for families to stay while their infant is being cared for at the hospital. The Conine Clubhouse is a residence made possible by donations from people who want to lend a hand to help those in need.
